How do I work out my face shape?
Each person’s face falls roughly into one of six shapes: oval, round, heart, square, or rectangle. You can work out which category your face falls into by following these simple steps:
- Pull your hair back into a ponytail. Make sure all your hair is off your face.
- Draw around the outline of your face in a mirror using an erasable pen, or ask someone to take a picture of you facing straight into the camera, with your hairline showing. We suggest taking one photo with a straight face and one smiling.
- Compare your face shape to the images below and select the face shape that matches most closely. Ignore your features, focus on the shape of your face outline.
Round Shape
- Equally wide and long
- May appear flat
- Soft, round jawline
The round-shaped face is similar to the square-shaped face with the length being equal to the width. However, the difference is that round-shaped faces are soft and curved in contrast to the angular shapes of the square face.
Earrings: A round face is complemented by long drop or dangle earrings. This design will elongate your face and make it look slimmer.
Necklaces: Longer, looping necklaces can help lengthen the look of the face by drawing the eyes down. Large focal components which create a V also create a powerful triangular point that creates a longer line. Avoid choker, collar and princess lengths, since they shorten the neck and add width to the throat.
Rectangle Shape
- Elongated shape
- Gently-curved chin
The rectangular face is longer than it is wide, with the width of the face at the forehead, cheekbones and chins almost the same.
Earrings: For a rectangular face, choose earrings that emphasize the width of your face. Studs, clustered earrings, short dangles, and hoops in medium to large sizes are a good fit for you.
Necklace: Short necklaces help to reduce the appearance of the length of the rectangular face. Therefore, opt for chokers or necklaces with collar and princess lengths.
Square Shape
- Similar width whole way down
- Angular Jaw
- Same width and height
The square face shape is characterised by a square, angular jaw with minimal curves. The face is as wide as it’s long with the forehead, cheekbones and jaw about equal in width.
Earrings: Soften the edges of a square face with earrings that are medium to long with rounded edges. Oval-shaped earrings can be a great go-to shape for your face!
Necklaces: Similar to earrings, choose necklaces with length and curves to soften the strong jaw line. Large focal elements on necklaces help draw attention below the neck to give the appearance of a longer face. Pendants with curves and swirls can also counter the strong angular elements of the jaw.
Heart Shape
- Widest at the forehead
- Tapers down to a sharp jawline
This face shape is characterised by being the widest at the forehead and cheeks and having a strong jawline that tapers off into a defined chin.
Earrings: For a heart-shaped face, find a design that is wider at the bottom than the top.
Necklaces: Heart-shaped faces look best with short necklaces with curves as they reduce the appearance of length in the jawline and soften the sharp chin. Hence, choker, collar and princess lengths are ideal.
Oval Shape
- Widest point between forehead and temples
- Gently-curved chin
The oval-shaped face is one that is longer than it is wide. Similar to the shape of an egg, the face is rounded with no sharp angles.
Earrings: Oval-shaped faces are the luckiest of all, as any shape of earrings works for you. Choose from any style.
Necklaces: The soft curves of the oval face are best accented by soft curving shapes such as pearls, ribbon, open link chains, affirmation rings and more.
Last, but not least, never forget to compliment your look with the most beautiful ornament of all – your smile! While jewellery certainly brightens up your look, the confidence and grace you carry your look with can make all the difference!
